BIO

“I am like the artists your parents listen to but asian and canonically queer.” - Areshi

There is therapeutic essence to Areshi, a 21-year-old non-binary singer-songwriter from Saitama, Japan. At the core of their music is an honest lyrical dissection of trauma, self, and love laid over alternative, pop, and rock melodies. Areshi’s specific and complex lyrics encapsulate what it's like living with their marginalized identities. In their music, you will hear their inspirations from 70s rock and boy bands of the 2010s.

Since Areshi moved to the US at 16, they have released an EP, "Fly Away," and a single, "When You Die," which has raked in over 700,000 streams on Spotify. For the past three years, Areshi has been working on their debut album "Calm in Peril," a collection of 13 songs about their struggles with mental health, childhood trauma, and self-identity. The album tells Areshi's life story written in the calm moments during perilous experiences. "Calm in Peril'' is a mix of old-school rock n' roll and the charming pop vocals found in the boy band hits of the 2010s. Areshi's warm and edgy voice ties the album together literally and figuratively.

"Dysphoria," the lead single from their upcoming debut album, "Calm in Peril," tells the story of Areshi's journey of learning to accept their gender identity to find happiness.

“Dysphoria” out now on Spotify and Apple Music.

MUSIC

Dysphoria

"Dysphoria" was born from Areshi's pain and resentment surrounding their gender identity. Written by Areshi and produced by Johnny Cummings and Sam Polizzi in Rochester, New York, the lead single "Dysphoria" has an Americana, folk-rock pop style as a show of rebellion to the genre's mainstream lack of explicitly queer songs. "Queer stories deserve to be told in every medium and genre, including the ones that have historically marginalized us," Areshi says. The track is a three-and-a-half-minute journey of finding peace of mind within the pains of gender dysphoria.

When You Die

Areshi began experimenting with a new sound in “When You Die,” a track about their complex feelings towards a loved one who was also their abuser. Areshi’s trials and tribulations of moving past childhood abuse in “When You Die” is sonically reminiscent of a James Bond movie soundtrack, creating a deeper intensity to the song.

“There is a wicked struggle of not knowing how you may feel when an abuser you loved dies, as even though you do not wish death upon them, their death would prevent them from hurting others.” - Areshi.

Fly Away

“Fly Away,” Areshi’s first EP is a snapshot into their mid-teen years, in which many milestones occurred. Through it’s five songs, the EP walks the listener through Areshi’s first time falling in love, learning to heal from their trauma, and beginning their life as they move from Japan to the United States.

“I will always have a special appreciation for Fly Away because it was the first time I really used songwriting as a vessel for introspection.” - Areshi
